Not that kind of fantasy you perv, a wild project that would be so cool when done.

I want to buy a Sunbeam Alpine GT

Kinja'd!!!

Kind of looks like a 3/4 scale Plymouth Barracuda doesn’t it?

Then I want to get a Daimler 2.5 liter hemi V8

Kinja'd!!!

Marry the two together, with maybe a small Holley or Carter carb to replace the SUs for a more American look.

Replace the Sunbeam and Alpine badges with Plymouth Barracuda and 2.5 Hemi badges.

Drive to cars and coffee and say it is a rare Mopar protype in response to the gas crisis, or import fighter, plus basically drive around and have a blast in it. Doubt it will ever happen, the p arts ( mostly overseas) and energy (mine) might be a little hard to find.

Anybody else have any wild bench engineering they would like to share?

I have a few. Ohhh lets to shall we?

1) Early Maserati Biturbo coupe (84/85) as they’re carbureted and terrible with carbs. So yank that motor out and stick a LS7 in it. Yes. I went there. Of course I’d back it with a TR6060 6 speed. This likely will happen in a few years. Maybe.

2) Alfa GTV6 - no blasphemy here. Just a clean car to start with, fab my own inconel headers, some custom cams and enjoy it.

3) This one is super crazy but it’s one of my biggest dreams - 80s Lotus Esprit perhaps a shell? Throw a Honda K series in it. Individual throttle bodies, all motor. Gawd.

4) First generation Porsche Boxster with a 996 GT3 engine. No explanation needed.

Honestly the Alfa is very likely after we have the rally car going in full tilt and my RX7 is where I want it. Assuming the GTV6 doesn’t surge in value; and I’m assuming it’s going to. If it stays reasonable you’ll see me do it in a few years.

I’ve always thought putting the air-cooled 602cc air-cooled 2-cyl engine from a 2CV in a FIAT 126p because it would give people a “Why?” reaction, and because it’s very similar to the 652cc air-cooled 2-cyl engine that originally came in the 126p, other than having slightly more horsepower. :P

Full on Supra TT drivetrain swap into my GS. Yes, they came with the engine in Japan, but they did not come with a manual transmission at all, so swapping one in requires a bit of fabrication that I don’t feel like doing (but has been done). Also, I’m not paying $10,000 for the Supra  6-speed.

For a long time I’ve wanted to stuff complete 993 Turbo mechanicals under a VW Thing and paint it olive drab with a yellow roll cage, more or less this with 450hp and AWD:

Kinja'd!!!

Then there’s one concocted right here on Oppo itself between myself and RamblinRover, the Maudi Quancho... a Matra/Simca/ Talbot Rancho built using Audi quattro running gear and a tuned VW TDI engine.

This, but with bulletproof 80's-90's Audi quattro locking-diff drivetrain and a boosted diesel, basically:

Unlike the Thihg, this could actually happen someday.

2. Toyota 2000GT kit car

3 . Any sort of small block v8 or diesel engined Ford Ranger(2011 or older) while still retaining 4wd capability.

4 . I’ve been falling in love with the motorcycle powertrain swaps into small coupes/convertables.

5 . Newer Unimog with creature comforts in the USA.

There is a GTV parked at an apartment complex about two miles from me. It hasn’t moved for about four years, it is complete, solid, but sun roached. I have left a note on it about once a year, so far no call.

I like the Maserati and the Lotus ideas too, I was looking at a Europa recently and read up on swaps, tricky because the transmission serves as the suspension mounting points.

My friend, coming up with wild automotive fantasies is basically what I do.

1) I’d like to take the front suspension from a Can Am Spyder and the rear suspension and drivetrain from a different trike and cobble them together with a custom tube-frame chassis to create a car that consists entirely of motorcycle parts.

2) Ever see how spacious the engine bays in old American land yachts are, especially when the engine is an inline six? Well, I figure there’d probably be enough room to stick at least two inline sixes (Maybe 2JZ’s?) side by side in there...

3) The same thing as 2, but with Honda CBX engines in a Miata.

4) This engine: https://freedom-motors.com/freedom_530cc.html in a BMW Isetta.

5) First-gen Civic on a Geo Tracker or Suzuki Samurai frame with an LS V8.

6) Mustang II body on an AWD van chassis, (preferably with an LS engine) because rally car.

7) This:

Kinja'd!!!

Plus this:

Kinja'd!!!

8) Oh, and 427-swapping my ‘66 Thunderbird. It’ll probably never happen, but it’s fun to dream.

I want to find a shitty 80's or 70's Rolls-Royce and turn it into a drift car. Rattle can black, but then gold plate the grille and have gold plated side pipes. That shoot flames. Would it be LS swapped? yes, because that’s easy, loud and heretical. Also gold wire wheels.

I feel like drifting isn’t about having good taste.

Edit:

Idea 2

There are people who chop LS engines in half making them into (physically) tiny little 4 bangers that still have good power. I feel like you could get one to fit in the front of a Suzuki Cappuccino. 200 hp, torque, RWD and the narrowest little itty bitty chassis means you’d be able to pick and choose your line like a motocyclist on our wide american roads. I’d keep the tires relatively narrow for all kinds of slip angle induced grins. All while staying in my lane and not speeding too much.

Indeed it does serve a purpose as far as mounting. My thoughts would be some sort of transaxle and make a mounting point for the suspension by re-engineering a crossmember in chromoly. Wouldn’t be too bad to do really.

One of mine is probably one of the most sane ideas out here.

I want a Trabant, but I want to make it electric. Just for those quick trips to the store. Not a lot of power or anything. Top speed of 45ish.

I’d like to have a tow rig that’s a slammed (on bags) GMT400 dually, with a diesel.

I’d also like to build a Stratos replica with either a Busso V6 or a honda J series.

There was a Rolls fo r sale near me for 7-8 grand, which is pretty cheap. The cheap years all have complicated hydraulics that control the suspension and ride height, I think I watched a show where they gave up and swapped in coilovers, but yeah, why the hell not.

Didnt know you could cut an LS in half, put it in a Saab Sonett and make perfect little death mobile.

I get that. Mine is perfect for a swap, but I’m doing a 1JZ and staying auto, because I’m not planning to do more than 350-400 HP with it. I’m still planning to work on my Fiero project as well, but this is just a short term street-friendly project that I want to do before everything JZ-related becomes expensive,  while the Fiero will be more of a track-oriented build, and will take awhile just because of how much work it needs . I’ve already got a couple parts for the GS , and plan to get the engine around this fall and will probably do the swap sometime next year.

Yeah, I think the V4 thing was from the leftovers of people building LS based V12s. I’m not sure if anyone really invested that much time in making them work (i’m not nearly smart enough to do it on my own.)

However a motorcycle company at one point did make their own LS based V4, however it was scaled down a bit, so not literally an LS cut in half.
